The American Public Works Assn. (APWA) announced the keynote speaker for the 2013 APWA Sustainability in Public Works Conference—James T. Waring, executive chairman and co-founder of CleanTECH San Diego.

Waring will speak about how public works projects can influence private sector sustainability. Prior to being built, public works and infrastructure projects undergo strenuous public debate about need, timing and cost-benefit. This public process often informs the broader community about government commitment to operational sustainability. As the public understands how sustainability makes sense for tax and ratepayers, awareness grows within the community about the benefits for incorporating sustainable solutions into private projects. It is a win-win for the total community.

For his presentation, Waring will draw upon his experience as executive chair and co-founder of CleanTECH San Diego. Through meaningful partnerships with private and public sector champions, CleanTECH San Diego promotes sustainable and clean technology best practices in the San Diego region. CleanTECH’s initiatives include sustainability advocacy, solar power, biofuels, smart grid, economic development, the revolution in transportation energy and sustainable communities. This is a model for other communities to follow.

Prior to co-founding CleanTECH San Diego, Jim Waring worked as deputy chief operating officer for Land Use and Economic Development for the city of San Diego. In 2012, he was appointed to the California Transportation Commission by California Governor Jerry Brown. He is also a commissioner for the San Diego House Commission. A practicing attorney for over 20 years, he is also a principal in the real estate investment firm FI Financial.
