Easy-to-fix household leaks account for more than 1 trillion gallons of water wasted each year across the country. To help curb water waste, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) WaterSense program is encouraging Americans to join the race to find and fix leaks during its sixth annual Fix a Leak Week, March 17 through 23, 2014.
With this year’s theme, “Chasing Leaks,” in mind, many WaterSense partners have organized running races, hands-on demonstrations, school contests, and other community events and outreach to promote leak detection and repair. At the national level, WaterSense is inviting its partners and interested plumbers to jump-start the week by joining a Fix a Leak Week “Twitter party” on Monday, March 17, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Eastern.
Twitter party participants can tweet and search using the hashtag #fixaleak to learn more about how to find a fix leaks and remind followers to “check, twist, and replace” during Fix a Leak Week:
- Check toilets for leaks by putting a few drops of food coloring into the tank; if color appears in the bowl within 10 minutes, there’s a leak. Don’t forget to flush afterwards!
- Twist on a new WaterSense labeled faucet aerator or showerhead, and tighten hose and pipe connections.
- Replace fixtures if necessary with WaterSense labeled models, which are independently certified for water efficiency and performance.
