The restoration of the San Elijo Lagoon in Encinitas, Ca., broke ground Nov. 29. The $100 million project is expected to be completed by early 2021 with the first phase of the lagoon’s restoration involving clearing vegetation and building dikes to control water quality.
Doug Gibson, executive director of the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy said, “Our work will improve tidal circulation in the lagoon and enhance the lagoon’s habitat in order to ensure prosperity and longevity for many of the lagoon’s native plants and animals.”
Ultimately, the project aims to create wetland habitat and pedestrian trails by widening channels, burying nutrient-rich sediments, restoring mudflats, and sculpting the bottom of the lagoon floor.
