Temporary Levee in South Dakota to be Removed

Crews will start taking down the temporary levee protecting Dakota Dunes from the Missouri River within the next week, reported the Sioux City Journal.

Dakota Dunes Community Improvement District Director Jeff Dooley told the Journal that the removal is the first step in building a permanent levee to protect the community if the river floods again in the future.

The temporary levee was built to protect Dakota Dunes from flooding last summer and was not constructed to engineering standards needed to stay in place, Dooley said.

Construction of the first section of the permanent levee should be completed by midsummer. Plans are also in the works to build additional permanent levees.

The current levee project is expected to cost about $700,000 and is being paid for with grants and a tax levy, Dooley said.
