The Dufferin Vistas Phase 2 stormwater management project was setup to provide stormwater quality and quantity control for a residential development with limited land area.
A conventional stormwater management pond was not possible due to topographical and environmental constraints.
The primary challenges of the project included difficult topography, limited useable land and a nearby environmentally sensitive area.
These factors imposed constraints on potential solutions which could meet the stormwater quality and quantity criteria. The stormwater management facility was required to be situated where it would be easily accessible to municipal maintenance crews and heavy equipment, and where it would not interfere with surrounding utilities and buildings.
The solution involved placing the entire stormwater management system within the limited space beneath the cul-de-sac at the edge of the development. This would ensure accessibility for the maintenance crews and inspectors.
The use of 3-meter tall I-Storm modules allowed maximum storage volume within a minimal footprint and was a good fit for the subject site’s relatively large topographic variation. Earth cover over some sections of the facility was over 10-feet, so a robust product was necessary.
The team were able to save valuable land by placing the stormwater facility underground. This allowed the city dual use of the land since they could implement parkland above the stormwater block. This shows a development in implementing emerging technologies in the stormwater space.
The underground facility installation has been completed. The tank has been fully buried and connected to stormwater services. Construction of the homes in the development are underway.
