The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) agreed in a federal court to update its national regulations for storm water runoff by Nov. 2016, according to Circle of Blue WaterNews.
EPA agreed to the deadline after the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Environmental Defense Center filed a lawsuit last year to push forward the new regulations. The groups originally sued EPA in 2003 to force tougher storm water rules, but EPA did not respond to that court order, leading to last December's lawsuit.
The draft rule for urban storm water pollution is due by Dec. 17, 2015, and the final rule by Nov. 17, 2016. The agency has a May 2016 deadline to determine whether runoff from forest roads requires a separate rule.
