Average sewer charges for U.S. households increased 5.5% in 2013 to $435 per year, according to an annual survey from the National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA).
The priciest sewer charges last year were in New England, where an average family paid $700 per year for sewage treatment and disposal, compared with the lowest per-year charges of $225 in the upper Great Plains.
NACWA expects sewer costs to increase about 5% annually over the next five years. The organization notes several factors that could account for these rising sewer costs, including gaps in infrastructure investment that have led to outdated pipe systems, and regulatory agencies cracking down on cities' combined sewer overflows into water bodies.
