As populations expand, urban areas grow and agricultural industry ramps up, there is an increasing strain on our wastewater treatment facilities. A particular challenge can be managing the nutrient levels in the water, especially while trying to keep to a budget and conserve energy and resources.
A new report from the Johnson Foundation explores opportunities for the water industry to continue providing clean effluent while also looking at ways to recover nitrogen and phosphorus and return it to the agricultural cycle.
In order to sustainably address the discharge of nutrients into the environment, the report addresses the following goals:
- Maximize the capture and reuse of waste stream nutrients;
- Minimize the energy used to process wastewater;
- Minimize the nutrients released into the environment;
- Minimize the alterations to the hydrologic cycle;
- Minimize the release of greenhouse has emissions from infrastructure; and
- Maximize economic benefits.
