World Water Week 2013 runs Sept. 1 through Sept. 7. The U.N. General Assembly declared 2013 the International Year of Water Cooperation, and the theme of this year's World Water Week, Water Cooperation: Building Partnerships. A global consortium of scientists, nonprofit organizations and policymakers will convene this week at the Stockholm International Water Institute in Sweden to discuss new research and developments in water conservation—and most critically, what needs to be done to protect and preserve a resource that is quickly becoming a commodity for even First World countries.
According to recent estimates by the World Health Organization, 768 million people do not have access to clean water, and 2.5 billion people do not have access to adequate sanitation facilities. This week, every time you turn on the faucet or take a shower, take a moment to consider how fortunate you are, and make an extra effort to not waste a resource that so many take for granted.
