The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is encouraging homeowners to add rain barrels to their properties this summer to conserve water and manage storm water runoff.
Rain barrels are an inexpensive, low-tech way to collect and store rainwater that would otherwise run off into storm drains and streams. Simply placing a rain barrel under a downspout provides a resident with water that can be used for plant and lawn irrigation, eliminating the need to turn on a hose during drought-prone summer months.
An exhibit in Philadelphia at the EPA’s Public Information Center is demonstrating to homeowners that rain barrels do not have to be boring and can be decorated to complement one’s home and landscaping. Check out the exhibit, and consider putting a rain barrel outside your home or facility and telling your neighbors about the virtues of rainwater harvesting.
