Storm Water Measure Brings $4 Monthly Fee to Porter, Ind.
The Porter, Ind. Town Council recently voted in a storm water ordinance t that will have property owners digging into their pockets for another $4 a month, according to a story in the Gary Post Tribune.
The fee will cover the town’s cost to initiate a storm water management plan mandated by the federal government for all municipalities. The MS4 program, which forces communities to comply with the Clean Water Act, is aimed at reducing the amount of pollutants released into waterways through storm water runoff.
In a joint workshop of the Storm Water Management Board and the Town Council, officials hashed out the costs and details involved in the program.
The fees collected from the 6,500 parcels in town would generate about $300,000 a year, which would cover the cost of engineering, planning, utilities, billing and other costs associated with the program. The fee will go into effect Jan. 1.
