Twin Cities Students Test Stormwater for Pollution
Recently, a group of gifted math and science students from several central Maine high schools were patrolling Minnesota’s Twin Cities looking for signs of stormwater pollution.
Students from Lewiston, Lisbon, Edward Little and Leavitt High Schools spent a morning surveying 35 Lewiston-Auburn businesses identified as potential hotspots for stormwater pollution. The list includes industrial, automotive, health care, and restaurant businessess.
The students looked for things like waste management, outdoor materials storage, vehicle storage.
The students were asked by the cities of Lewiston and Auburn to do this project through a program called the Androscoggin Valley Education Collaborative.
When the data is eventually compiled, it will be used to put together informational brochures that will be circulated throughout the Twin Cities’ area.
