Basin Study in Wheaton, Ill., Aims to Help Rehabilitate Sanitary Sewer System
In Wheaton, Ill., the city has worked to maintain and rehab its sanitary sewer, including manhole and sewer main rehabilitation. Approximately 80% of the mains in the city are lined. However, the sanitary sewer system experiences significant excess flow in some basins during wet weather. In spring 2011, RJN Group Inc. began a thorough and targeted sewer system evaluation survey of one of these areas, Basin 4.
The evaluation includes short-term and long-term flow monitoring and analysis, targeted manhole inspections, smoke testing, televising of mains and selected laterals, building inspections, and hydraulic modeling with SewerGEMS. Rehabilitation recommendations, design and construction engineering will be provided for both public and private sector portions of the system. Post-rehabilitation flow monitoring will be performed to verify the effectiveness of the construction approach.
Basin 4 will serve as a template for definition of an approach to investigate, model and rehabilitate the remaining sanitary sewer system to reduce flow in the rest of the city.
