Green Roof and Wall Industry Professionals Recognized at CitiesAlive 2011 Conference
Green Roofs for Healthy Cities announced it has honored professionals in the green roof and wall industry with Awards of Excellence at the CitiesAlive 2011 conference in Philadelphia. The awards luncheon on Dec. 2 recognized 10 winners, with eight design awards and two individual awards, the Civic Award and the Research Award, presented.
The winner of the Civic Award is Howard Neukrug, commissioner of the Philadelphia Water Department. Neukrug founded the “Office of Watersheds” within the department in 1999, at the time an unprecedented approach for a major city utility. The office runs a series of programs including the Green City, Clean Waters initiative, a 25-year plan that includes $2.4 billion in future expenditures. Neukrug also serves as chairman of the Clean Water America Alliance's Urban Water Sustainability Council.
The winner of the Research Award is Paulo Cesar Tabares-Velasco from the National Renewable Energy Lab in Golden, Colo. Tabares-Velasco has published papers on heat transfer and green roofs in the last four years; the first received three awards from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers.
