St. Joseph, Mo., and Salina, Kan., receive funds to improve existing systems
Dec. 6, 2011

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced it has awarded the cities of St. Joseph, Mo., and Salina, Kan., grants totaling more than $700,000 for improvements to existing sewer systems.

St. Joseph, Mo., received $485,000 to improve its combined sewer system. The project is expected to be complete by summer of 2014. “The project will reduce pollution discharges to waters of Missouri and clean the water that sustains the future of St. Joseph. These water infrastructure funds will partially fund a construction project which is estimated to cost $16.2 million,” said EPA Region 7 administrator Karl Brooks.

The funds support construction of the Whitehead Creek Stormwater Separation Project, which will remove storm water runoff from the existing sewer system and prevent combined sewer overflows and pollution discharges to the Missouri River.

Salina, Kan., received $243,000 to improve its drinking water and sewer systems. The project is expected to be complete by the end of 2012 and will extend the existing systems to provide adequate service for existing housing and new housing lots. The construction will include approximately 1,800 ft of water line and 2,000 ft of sewer line.
