Company Provides Flow Monitoring Services to Des Plaines, Ill.

City’s sanitary sewer system previously overburdened by heavy rain, storm drainage issues
Oct. 13, 2011

Beginning in the spring of 2011, RJN Group Inc. installed six flow meters in the city of Des Plaines’ sanitary sewer system. In recent years the city had been experiencing sewer surcharging during heavy rain events that is exacerbated by storm drainage issues.

After monitoring the flow meters for 75 days, RJN was able to determine the quantity of excess flow in the system. RJN then used hydraulic modeling with SewerGEMS to determine the sewer capacity. The data from the flow meters and the hydraulic modeling will be used in the final report to the city, in which recommendations for improvement to increase capacity and reduce inflow and infiltration will be made.
