Oldcastle Precast Inc. - Croydon is providing all-reinforced precast concrete pipe, approximately 15,000 ft and 62 RCP pipe fittings for the large drainage project along Route 93 Broad St., Hazleton, Luzerne County, Pa., as part of the “Broad Street Betterment Program.”

Large precast concrete drainage pipe, with a diameter that ranges from 12 in. to 27 in., is placed alongside of the underground businesses that are located beneath Broad Street and were in use at the turn-of-the-century. The 15 vault-like stores will be opened up, supported from below and then filled in to support the sidewalk and curb/roadway traffic.

The precast concrete drainage pipe will effectively protect groundwater by conveying storm water through the underground infrastructure system. Due to the flexibility and modularity of the precast pipe, Oldcastle Precast Inc. was able to easily meet the requirements of the drainage project. With its unmatched strength and proven performance, the precast concrete pipe will last more than 100 years.

Oldcastle Precast is supplying all precast concrete drainage pipe and fittings to Oldcastle Precast- Pennsy Supply (Slusser Bros) who is the general contractor for this $27.4 million project. The project should be completed by late 2013.

The Broad Street Betterment Program, administered by Pen Dot District 4, is designed to help improve the safety of the drivers and pedestrians in the city of Hazelton. Turning lanes on Rt. 93 will improve traffic flow through the downtown area and will make traveling much safer. The plan includes the construction of a large drainage project, lighting crosswalks, updated traffic signals, pavement markings and restoration of the downtown area parking spaces and sidewalks.
