The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative has released a new report titled, “Storm Water Management in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Basin: Cities Charting the Way Forward.”

This is the first report released under the initiative’s Green CiTTS (Cities Transforming Towards Sustainability) Program. The initiative is considered a prominent voice representing more than 80 mayors from the U.S. and Canada dedicated to protecting and restoring the vitality of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River and improving the quality of life for the residents of the region.

Based on a comprehensive survey of storm water practices of members of the Cities Initiative, the report showcases municipal storm water management in a state of transition across the basin. There is a range of issues facing municipal storm water practitioners, as well as a wide range of best practices already adopted.

Interesting takeaways from the survey of 25 cities include a large majority of respondents believing that federal/provincial/state requirements are a main driver for storm water action; 18 cities identified lack of funding as their main obstacle to storm water implementation; and most cities have multiple municipal departments involved in storm water management.
