Phase III of the Hot Springs Sanitary Sewer Evaluation Study (SSES), involving hydraulic modeling of the sanitary collection system, is on schedule to be complete this month. Phase III began in October 2010 and is being conducted by RJN Group Inc.

The SSES project involves four phases. Taking the information gathered from Phase I and II, RJN is creating and then calibrating a dynamic hydraulic model for the entire sanitary collection system of the city of Hot Springs. This includes all 10-in. and larger sewer mains, more than 50 lift stations and 2,800 grinder pumps. The hydraulic model will be calibrated for both dry- and wet-weather events allowing RJN engineers to follow the interconnection ability of the mains, pump stations, and grinder pumps. The engineers will then be able to take from the model the location of the hydraulic choke points and restrictions in the system and input solutions to fix those problems.

The findings from the hydraulic model, along with the data found in Phase I and Phase II, will then be incorporated into design and rehabilitation phases of the project. As the project and improvements proceed, capacity will be improved for the entire city of Hot Springs sanitary collection system.
