Redi-Rock Intl. Announces Winners of 2010 Rocky Awards
Redi-Rock Intl. announced the winners of the annual Rocky Awards for projects completed in 2010. The Rocky Awards are an annual honoring of the best Redi-Rock walls built in the categories of Commercial Wall of the Year, Water Application Wall of the Year, Residential Wall of the Year, Freestanding Wall of the Year and Innovative Project of the Year. More than 130 Redi-Rock manufacturers across North America competed for the awards, which were presented at the Redi-Rock Annual Producer Meeting in Las Vegas on March 21.
Redi-Rock Walls of New England of Newport, N.H., was awarded Commercial Wall of the Year for the Vermont Electric Power Co./Green Mountain Power substation expansion. The project comprised a total of 21,200 sq ft of Redi-Rock walls that were installed in just 12 days. Each block was installed in under one minute to meet the project deadline. One wall stood 27 ft at the highest point, and the other stood 16.5 ft tall.
Kistner Concrete Products, based in East Pembroke, N.Y., was awarded Water Application Wall of the Year for a stream channel protection project completed at a public golf course in the town of Tonawanda, N.Y. The creek banks were eroding and the golf course needed a solution installed before spring. The town chose Redi-Rock gravity walls based on a previous project completed on the same creek. A total of 15,000 sq ft of Redi-Rock gravity walls were installed over the course of 60 days and walls heights ranged from 4 to 7.5 ft.
Redi-Rock of Kentuckiana of Mount Washington, Ky., received Residential Wall of the Year for its project at a home in Louisville, Ky. The project included 12-ft-high Ledgestone gravity walls, freestanding walls, steps and caps with a color that integrated with the house’s brick finish. The owner liked Redi-Rock so much he chose to expand the project to include a 10-ft-wide grand staircase as well.
Jensen Precast of Las Vegas was awarded Freestanding Wall of the Year for its walls in a Las Vegas freeway landscaping project designed by landscape architects. The 2- to 6-ft-tall freestanding walls were designed in a spiral pattern as a purely decorative addition to the freeway on- and off-ramps. The freestanding walls were part of an 80-acre landscaping project that stretched along 5 miles of freeway. Jensen Precast custom-cast blocks and worked closely with the installer to complete it the challenging installation.
Wilbert Precast, based in Spokane, Wash., was awarded Innovative Project of the Year for a memorial amphitheater project at Camp Cowles Boy Scout Camp outside Spokane. The amphitheater overlooks two “fire bowls” and a stage area built of Redi-Rock paver slabs. The amphitheater was created using 220 Redi-Rock middle blocks and 220 Redi-Rock cap blocks, plus 50 steps. The 300-seat amphitheater is now ADA accessible and will be used for campfires, ceremonies, weddings and other events.
