East Coast Civil Engineers Register Positive Response to New Jersey Approval for Stormceptor
Imbrium Systems announced that the regulatory and market response over the last quarter of 2010 from civil engineers in several states on the East Coast to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) online approval for Stormceptor STC has been extremely positive. Stormceptor STC, an oil and sediment separator (hydrodynamic separator) for storm water treatment and spill capture, was approved by the NJDEP in September 2010 for use as an online storm water treatment device.
Based on the recently updated NJDEP storm water performance testing standards, the Stormceptor technology is the only hydrodynamic device that is currently allowed for use in an online configuration. This performance-based approval allows land developers to save tens of thousands of dollars and valuable land space while still providing the best storm water quality treatment for their projects.
Many states and jurisdictions across North America have been relying on NJDEP's storm water technology verification and certification process (Technology Acceptance and Reciprocity Partnership or TARP), but may be unaware of this offline requirement. Several years ago, NJDEP reviewed its test standards and discovered pollutant washout during medium and intense storms—scour—was a major issue with most hydrodynamic separators. As a result, NJDEP quickly modified its storm water device design requirements in early 2008 to address this alarming environmental concern. The outcome was that NJDEP mandated all storm water manufactured treatment devices were only approved as offline water quality devices unless the department received new test data to a more stringent standard verifying a device would not wash out silt-sized pollutants during intense, high-flow rain events.
The new NJDEP testing and verification process has been a welcomed improvement and Stormceptor STC is the first and only water quality treatment technology to date that has achieved online approval. According to Imbrium Systems, Stormceptor STC is a proven high-performance storm water treatment technology that developers can implement to save on construction costs when storm water treatment devices are used in an online configuration. An online water quality device allows the passing of storms greater than the NJDEP water quality design storm through the device, without the added cost of additional storm water sewer infrastructure and installation time.
