Hanson and StormTrap Collaborate on Storm Water Detention System
Hanson Pipe & Precast and StormTrap showcased their commitment to preserving water and natural resources in Ontario by manufacturing and installing StormTrap’s unique precast concrete modular storm water detention system at the University of Western Ontario’s Richard Ivey School of Business. The university is seeking LEED Gold Certification for the project.
A storm water detention system eliminates the need for an above ground storm water detention pond by storing storm water underground. The University of Ontario was planning expansions near the Richard Ivey School of Business, and needed a system that could withstand construction traffic passing above ground. Installed in January of this year, the StormTrap technology has continued to provide the university with the maximum water storage volume, and has successfully accommodated the expansions now taking place.
“We were able to supply the school with a high quality storm water management system that has easily solved multiple needs without adding extra expense or time,” said Bob Christensen, senior vice president, Hanson Pipe & Precast East Region.
Contracted by Blue-Con Construction to provide approximately 600 cu meters of storm water detention, Hanson’s Whitby, Ontario, Canada, facility manufactured and installed the three-meter-high DoubleTrap reinforced high strength concrete detention system in only one day. The DoubleTrap system provided the following advantages:
• No hydraulic backup into the system; • 100% accessibility for inspection and maintenance; • Customizable modular design, available in sizes from 2 ft-4 in. to 10 ft-10 in.; • Maximum storage volume with a minimum footprint; • Fast onsite installation; • Low installation costs; and • Flexible design for infiltration of storm water or a completely contained system.“We were able to work with Hanson Pipe & Precast and StormTrap to ensure quick and efficient installation that was crucial for this project,” said Brandon Haasen, project manager, Blue-Con Construction. “Both companies were able to deliver on all time constraints, ensuring trucks would arrive every 15 minutes, ready to be unloaded in the order needed for each piece to be set–almost like a puzzle.”
Hanson has a goal of improving and decreasing the presence of inadequate water management systems and practices in Ontario by offering the most comprehensive solutions in storm water management products, service and expertise. Locally producing a system that provides storm water management, reuse of water, longevity and efficient use of space, aligns with its dedication to sustainability and repairing the area’s infrastructure.
Construction at the University of Western Ontario is expected to be complete by March 2011.
