In an attempt to provide an environmentally respectful design while creating a safe and effective year-round walkway, Smile Sanctuary in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., updated to a more eco-friendly exterior.

The project was completed by Chip’s Landscaping, the first and only certified RainXchange contractors in the Capital District. The business-front rainwater-harvesting project supports environmental sustainability as well as local sustainability. All labor, supplies and resources came from local small businesses, including New York-based Uniloc, which provided the hardscape permeable paver material.

The project resolves a longstanding heaving issue with the office entry walkway due to storm water runoff. It also compliments the business’s commitment to eco-friendly practices, as rainwater is captured to reduce storm water runoff to waterways via local storm water management, and uses the captured water to sustain perimeter gardens. All of the lighting and systems requiring electricity are high-efficiency. In addition, the overall design provides a soothing and inviting entranceway that compliments the character and nature of the dental practice.

Installation of the Aquascape Rainxchange corrected several problems that many outdoor spaces have, including the sidewalk heaving due to storm water runoff seeping under walkways. Rainxchange will allow water to filter thru the walkway and be directed away it. Use of new Uniloc permeable pavement in combination with rainwater collection and improved site drainage will result in a small increase in pavement temperature (due to water collection), which will reduce snow accumulation and the chance of icing.
