New Jersey implemented the Municipal Stormwater Regulation Program in 2004. Municipalities, public complexes and highway agencies regulated under the program are required to label all storm drains that meet the criteria described in their permits on or before 60 months of the effective date of permit authorization, which for most permittees is April 2009. Storm drains are commonly misused by the public for the dumping of garbage and chemicals such as paint, motor oil, antifreeze, pesticides and other harmful pollutants. The garbage and chemicals enter the water in the storm drains and are then carried directly into nearby streams, rivers, lakes and other bodies of water, seriously damaging water quality and the environment. Marking storm drains helps to make the public aware of the importance of water conservation and ensures a healthier environment for everyone.
While there are several options available for labeling storm drains, many of them, such as stenciling or painting, provide only a temporary label and have to be replaced or retouched frequently.
Seeking a permanent solution to this problem, Almetek Industries Inc. developed its line of metal storm drain markers with longevity and durability in mind. Available in painted or natural stainless steel, aluminum or brass, these markers come in a wide variety of symbols and legends, are virtually indestructible, install easily and quickly and are highly visible. Custom markers can be created with unique symbols and legends.
