Professor John Anthony Allan, the 2008 Stockholm Water Prize Laureate and a professor at King's College in London, England, will give the keynote address at WEFTEC's opening general session the evening of Oct. 19. Also speaking will be Terrence O'Brien, president of the Board of Commissioners for the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago and 2008 recipient of the Water Environment Federation (WEF) Public Officials Award; Adam Zabinski, president of WEF; and Rebecca West, president-elect of WEF.
The morning of Oct. 20, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley will present "Making Chicago a Global Leader in Water and Sustainability." Daley will share the recently unveiled Chicago Climate Action Plan and how to work with the private sector to increase market-based opportunities while leveraging additional dollars from state and federal government grants and loans.
Dr. David L. Sedlak, professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, will also present the morning of Oct. 20. His topic is "Thinking Beyond the Box About the Challenges Posed by Emerging Contaminants."
Dr. Glen T. Daigger, senior vice president and chief technology officer of CH2M HILL will speak about urban water and residuals management the afternoon of Oct. 20.
Two panels will be held on Oct. 21: one focusing on sustainability and the environmental platforms of presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain, and another on climate change, including remarks from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Ben Grumbles.
