Committee says finished portions, construction zones suffered no major damage

China's south-to-north water diversion project has suffered no major damage as a result of the nation's recent 7.8-magnitude earthquake, according to the construction committee responsible for the project. The committee had its branches assess the impact on both finished and unfinished key areas and buildings.

Construction began on the multi-billion-dollar project began in 2002; its purpose is to transfer prevalent water from the southern part of the nation to the dry northern region.

China's Water Resources Ministry has sent work teams to the hardest-hit areas to prevent dams bursting. "Local governments should monitor the projects to discover and repair damage as soon as possible," said Water Minister Chen Lei.
