Australian Lake to Irrigate Renowned Gardens
The Ballarat City Council in Victoria, Australia, has completed a diversion project which sends storm water from Lake Gardens to irrigate the nearby Ballarat Botanical Gardens.
The council worked with TGM engineer Peter Tadgell to study runoff flows around the lake and determine the best point of capture. Storm water flows are now redirected to Swan Pool, which can hold enough water to feed the gardens for up to 25 days via a pump and pipeline.
"For the first time in four years, we're actually planting annuals, so this year you'll see flowers in the garden beds," said Ballarat City Council Lake Wendouree Project Manager Jeff Pulford. Since the council has eliminated much of its need to deliver water to the site, as previously depended on, it has freed much water for other local assets, according to Pulford.
