India Unveils New Flood Information Website
India's Water Resources Minister Ramashray Prasad Singh has unveiled a new website, http://fmis.bih.nic.in, dedicated to the Floods Management Information System (FMIS).
The website will make possible the international exchange of flood-related information and provide coverage of FMIS activities, according to Singh. It will offer flood maps of the Begusarai, Sitamarhi, Darbhanga, Madhubani, Muzaffapur, Sheohar, Samastipur, East Champaran, Supaul, Saharsa and Khagaria distrcits, with detailed information offered even at the village level.
Embankment breaches, flood-affected area maps, emergency-related information, flood frequency and intensity maps and daily flood bulletins and rainfall forecasts are some of the other website offerings.
The FMIS cell has aided India's disaster management department in terms of managing relief work and determining the timing of anti-erosion work before the onset of this year's monsoon, said Ajay Nayak, secretary for the water resources department.
