Minnesota High School Wins Environmental Award

Two Harbors High School recognized for waste and pollution prevention partnership

One of 12 Governor's Awards for Waste and Pollution Prevention winners, Two Harbors High School has been recognized for its partnerships with Minnesota nonprofit organizations, public agencies and institutions for environmental benefits.

The award honors Two Harbors High's collaboration with LHB Inc., architects of the structure. LHB's project description indicates using building and site features to enhance water quality, energy efficiency and waste reduction during construction and into the future.

"A lot of things we talked about during the planning process are being recognized," said Principal Bob Nyberg. "We're on the cutting edge with some of the things we did."

"The building does not tie into the storm water system," according to LHB documents,"instead, storm water is dealt with entirely on site--giving the site a lower release rate than predevelopment."

The project, according to LHB, saves about 1,800 gal per water a year, plus about 6.7 million Kbtu and 2.2 million lb of carbon dioxide emissions annually, saving the school district approximately $85,700 a year.
