The State of Oregon has evaulated and accepted WoodStraw wood-strand erosion control material for use as a temporary mulch, adding it to the qualified products list (QPL). WoodStraw, by Forest Concepts LLC, Auburn, Wash., can now be specified as an acceptable erosion control material for Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) projects in the state and in all jurisdictions where the ODOT QPL is recognized.
"WoodStraw erosion control material is very attractive for Central Oregon since it is long-lasting and wind-resistant," said Don Kliewer, president of Kliewer Engineering & Associates, Bend, Ore., who has been using the product since 2005. "Both of those properties are very important in our high desert conditions."
The Washington state Department of Transportation (WSDOT) approved WoodStraw's use in early 2006, and the Washington Department of Ecology followed suit in July 2007. Since its acceptance in Washington, WoodStraw has been used for erosion control in Pierce County, on the third runway at Seattle-Tacoma Intl. Airport and for the Mt. Si bridge project. The material has also been used following serious wildland fires in Southern California and Northwest Utah.
Since its introduction in 2005, more than 2,600 tons of WoodStraw material has been applied for erosion control in seven western states.
