New Orleans Hosts Eco-Friendly Art Exhibit
A contemporary cistern commissioned by Global Green USA which retains rainwater for use in homes and other buildings will be a center piece of an art show title "Something in the Night" opening Jan. 18. When the exhibit is over, the cistern will be placed in the International School of Louisiana as part of Global Green's Green Seed Schools project.
The art exhibit, at New Orleans' Contemporary Arts Center, will feature works by international artists who have integrated materials they have found or been given in and around New Oreleans to create pieces demonstrating the importance of eco-friendly technology as part of a green movement to reduce carbon emissions and conserve resources. The cistern, designed by local architectural firm Future Proof, functions by collecting rainwater for drinking and other uses in a fashion geared toward conserving water and energy.
"People in our community tend to argue that we have too much water rather than a need to conserve it, but there is a huge amount of energy that goes into making water potable," said Prisca Weems, principal architect for Future Proof. "And as a community, we're facing a lot of issues with water from conservation to the health of wetlands."
