Agency Funds Tahoe Water Quality Projects
The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) has authorized the release of nearly $3 milion for various California-Nevada border water and air quality projects. The funds will support 15 environmental improvement projects at Sierra Lake.
Property owners support environmental mitigation funds, which aim to offset the impacts of their new develpoment work. Local jurisdictions then distribute dollars to the TRPA for air and water quality improvement projects.
Three South Lake Tahoe, Calif., erosion control undertakings supported by the TRPA funding will receive approximately $850,000 in water quality mitigation funds. The rehabilitation efforts will help restore areas damaged by recent wildfires.
June blazes destroyed more than 250 residences and scorched 3,100 acres. Sediment removal, Lake Tahoe Boulevard piping and Gardner Mountain storm drain projects are planned to improve the region's post-fire water quality.
"These funds are put to good use by the local jurisdictions to help in the overall effort to preserve and restore this special place," said Jeanne McNamara, TRPA's principal planner.
Although no Nevada jurisdictions have been identified as receiving mitigation funds this year, Placer County, Calif., was authorized $450,000 for a Kings Beach water quality project, $150,000 for a Tahoe Pines erosion control project and $393,240 for an alternative fueling station.
