Northwest Storms End, Floods Persist

High waters impede rescue and repair efforts

Even though storms pounding the Pacific Northwest have ceased, dangerous flooding persists across the region. The storm system, which killed at least seven people, took down trees, washed out roads and major highways and flooded homes and businesses. The extent of much damage, however, remains unclear as floodwaters have not yet receded.

Rescue crews and volunteers continue searching for missing persons, and National Guard troops helped evacuate a 20-unit trailer park near the Chehalis River. Helicopters have picked up homeowners from their rooftops, taking them to safety. Many buildings, including Grays Harbor Community Hospital, have suffered power outages.

Flooding has also threatened to overwhelm a number of roadways, including vital links to the Puget Sound area such as I-12, making it difficult to seek missing people, repair damages and bring emergency supplies to the region.

"It's hard to comprehend five to 10 ft under until you see those houses," said Gov. Chris Gregoire.

The storm continued on to the Upper Midwest, dumping up to 9 in. of snow.
