Patrick G. Hunt has received the 2007 Hancor Soil and Water Engineering Award for his contributions to the science and implementation of innovative new systems for animal waste treatment to improve water quality. He was presented with the award at the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) annual meeting.
Hunt, a 9-year ASABE member, is a research leader with the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service Coastal Plans Soil, Water and Plant Research Center. He has pioneered technologies for animal wastewater treatment lagoons and the development of improved water quality on a watershed basis via riparian buffers and wetlands. By development of the unifying theory and design criteria for overland flow treatment of municipal wastewater, Hunt has provided a land treatment alternative for municipalities in areas with low permeability soils. Hunt's research and new technologies have provided methods of manure management that have greatly reduced the potential environmental impact of confined livestock wastes.
Frank C. Seymore, vice president and general manager of Hancor, congratulated Hunt for his leadership, adding, "Hancor is proud to sponsor this award in conjunction with the ASABE because it is important to recognize individual contributions that lead to the advancement of soil and water engineering."
