The city of Chippewa Falls, Wisc., recently cited the Wisconsin Renaissance Faire for an erosion issue. Chippewa Falls officials said they have presented the fair with seven notices since a Jan. 16, 2006, storm water management and construction site erosion control permit issuance.
Fair President Shane D. McVey received a city citation dated Nov. 1 for failing to comply with city permit storm water requirements. A county court date is scheduled for Dec. 18. In a letter to McVey, Assistant City Engineer Robbie Krejci stated that the city can cite the fair every day its site does not meet permit standards.
Chippewa Falls' Board of Public Works will meet this evening to discuss additional penalties and options. "Stopping the active erosion should be your first priority," wrote Jim Devlin, a runoff management specialist for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, in a 2007 letter to fair management. "If you should fail to meet this requirement, be aware that we're authorized to seek penalties in excess of $13,000 per day per offense."
Until fair staff ensure the site's detention ponds are "substantially completed," said Krejci, city officials will continue to deem it noncompliant.
