Land sales to fund detention area development

Glen Ellyn, Ill., officials plan to sell plots of land near five corners to fund the construction of an Ackerman Park storm water detention facility.

The new facility, which village leaders approved Tuesday, will run along Main Street. It was required at the time of purchase that the current land owner deed the property to Glen Ellyn in the future. Officials are hoping to earn approximately $450,000 by auctioning off the land. The Ackerman Park plot on which the facility will be built was donated by the Glen Ellyn Park District.

The detention facility should be able to handle increasing storm water levels spurred by development, said Planning and Development Director Staci Hulseberg. The village intends to begin the project as soon as possible, in hopes that it will be complete by June 2008.

The park district will gain two soccer fields from the storm water project; one will serve as a retention facility. The village and property owner will obtain additional retail property. "Everyone will benefit from the project," Hulseberg said.
