The Quad Cities is finding new and exciting ways to retain the rain. Green roofs, bioswales, rain gardens, rain barrels, porous parking lots and native plantings are all part of green thinking, landscaping and design. River Action continues to encourage the Quad Cities to go green and retain the rain.
A Retain the Rain workshop on permeable paving that reduces storm water runoff will be held Oct. 3 at 10 a.m. on the LeClaire Levee parking lot in LeClaire, Iowa. The event is open to the general public and will feature Wayne Peterson, urban resources conservationist for NRCS, Iowa City, Iowa; Rob Wolfe of RJ Wolfe and Sons, contractor for the project; and River Action, sponsor for Retain the Rain.
The sollution to reducing the Quad Cities' storm water runoff, and thus lowering flood levels and improving the quality of water in rivers and streams, lies in increasing the permeability of home, business and industrial properties. One of the best ways to achieve this is by designing and installing simple, cost-effective projects like permeable parking lots.
Those in attendance will receive an information packet including everything you need to know about storm water policies and reimbursement credits in the Quad City area. It will also include "Six Simple Things You Can Do to Save the Mississippi River," River Action's guide to storm water management.
The workshop is free. Please register by calling River Action at 563.322.2969 or e-mail riveraction.org before Oct. 1. For more information, contact Dan McNeil by e-mail at [email protected].
