As part of a grant-funded study of Kiddie Beach in Channel Islands Harbor, Oxnard, Calif., the Ventura County Watershed Protection District (VCWPD) evaluated persistent beach pollution problems from the city's west storm drain. A final report released in 2004 suggested treatment devices for controlling the problematic trash and debris.

Fresh Creek Technologies Inc.'s floating Trash Trap netting system was selected as the most appropriate device to address this issue. Crews installed it in June 2007, and the city will maintain it.

Oxnard officials and VCWPD representatives dedicated the new system during ceremonies in Oxnard on July 26. "This important decision marks the culmination of more than three years of work with the city and the district to address their needs," said Fresh Creek chairman and chief executive officer Dennis Moran.

City officials have said the floating trash- and debris-catching device traps ... unsightly items and pollutants like discarded beverage containers, plastic and paper wrappings and rusting metal objects that would normally end up on our beaches." These items become trapped in the system's mesh nets, which are discarded of in a local landfill and replaced when full.

"We continue to work with the city and the district to assist them in other areas where trash and debris are a problem," Moran said. "Our combined goal is to provide safe and clean beaches for the city of Oxnard and the district."
