Scholarship Established to Honor Prominent Engineer

Husband, former employer fund endowment to continue her water quality mission

The College of Engineering at San Diego State University (SDSU) announced the establishment of a $100,000 endowed scholarship in memory of Carol Forrest, P.E., a San Diego-based civil engineer, erosion and sediment control expert and active SDSU Alumni Association board of directors member.

Graduate students within the College of Engineering who demonstrate an interest in studying the effects of storm water and urban runoff on water resources are eligible to receive the Carol Forrest, P.E., Memorial Watershed Management Scholarship Endownment.

Forrest's former employer, Geosyntec Consultants, and her husband, Michael V. Harding, will fund the endowment.

"We are deeply honored to have an endowed scholarship established in Carol's name," said David Hayhurst, College of Engineering dean. "She was a well-known expert on erosion and sediment control, and we hope to support students who share the same passion Carol had for studying water resources."

Forrest, who helped create the Soil Erosion Research Laboratory at the SDSU College of Engineering in the late 1990s, died in a helicopter crash Aug. 13, 2006. She was serving as logistics director for the Flight of Discovery, a scientific expedition commemorating the 200th anniversary of the return of Lewis and Clark from Oregon to Missouri. During her trip, she planned to take water quality samples at major river confluences along the 3,600-mile National Historic Trail.
