Drainage System Failing Texas Town

Flour Bluff, Texas, underwater after heavy rains

This week's heavy rains clogged the drainage system in Flour Bluff, Texas, leaving many neighborhood yards underwater.

The Westridge Acres subdivision was hit especially hard with clogged pipes and flooded yards and streets; the development's roadside ditches are failing to address these problems.

The city-approved plan is designed to have road pipes carry storm water into a detention pond before it empties into the city's water system. This system, however, has some kinks that need working out.

"Until we get more information, it's going to be hard to tell," said Valerie Gray of Flour Buff's storm water division. "But we did check the pond out, we did take pictures, and we're going to take a look at everything before we can decide what the problem is."

Until then, residents continue to struggle with their water-logged subdivision. "I haven't left since Tuesday because I'm not driving my automobile through it," said Westridge Acres resident Wanda Burns, who moved into her home in December and never expected to buy into these storm water problems.

The city does not plan on pumping out the water from Westridge Acres, as they believe levels are decreasing and shallow enough for drivers to get through safely.

"A lot of these houses, no one is in them right now," said Gray. "So we're going to give it a little more time, and we're hoping not to receive any more rain. We think that it will recede enough."
