Michigan to Fund Storm Water Runoff Study

The Michigan Sea Grant program has recommended funding for a planned study on the effect storm water discharge has on the village of Spring Lake, Mich. The study is one of three projects recommended by the Michigan Sea Grant program.

If funding is approved by the Michigan Legislature as a part of the annual budget for the Sea Grant program, the study would last two years through Grand Valley State University’s Annis Water Resource Institute in Muskegon, Mich. the Muskegon Chronicle reported that the study would center on examining storm water pollution from storm water sewers.

Sea Grant is a joint program of Michigan State University and the University of Michigan as a part of the National Sea Grant Program, a network of 30 university-based programs in coastal states.

The group is asking for $225,000 for the Spring Lake Study.

Al Steinman, a faculty member with the Annis Water Resources Institute, told the Muskegon Chronicle that the study will examine areas that will experience future growth and its potential effect on storm water amounts and water quality. The study should help researchers determine where management practices shouldl be applied in order to improve storm water.
