The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) updated a list of best management practices (BMP) to prevent soil erosion and storm water runoff pollution caused by logging and other forest management efforts. Previously, DNR’s BMP guidelines had not been revised since 2009.
The updated guidelines include procedures for endangered species assessment, estimating stream channel width and culvert diameters, and tree harvesting, as reported by The Detroit News. Additionally, sections including forest roads, chemical treatments and use of pesticides have been modified.
Michigan DNR, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Michigan Assn. of Timbermen, and the Michigan Forest Products Council contributed to the revisions.
