Fourth Nor'easter Brings Minor Coastal Flooding

The fourth Nor’easter of the season was less severe than anticipated with minor flooding
March 22, 2018

Winter Storm Toby, the fourth Nor’easter in less than three weeks, covered the East Coast with record levels of snow and minor coastal flooding. Coastal flood warnings were issued for parts of the Jersey Shore and the Delaware Bay, but Boston is expected to escape the brunt of the storm as it rolls out the afternoon of March 22. The Weather Channel reported that the heaviest snowfall landed in southern Pennsylvania and the Appalachians with up to 19 in. of snow recorded.

While not as powerful as previous Nor’easter storms this year, Winter Storm Toby brought surprisingly high levels of snowfall for the second day of spring. The storm also had a long reach, affecting areas in Florida, Georgia and Kentucky with hail, heavy winds and tornado warnings, as reported by TIME. More than 4,000 flights were canceled, with American Airlines suspending service at New York-based airports John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia.

While the National Weather Service put out coastal flood warnings and both the Boston Herald and CBS Philly warned the threat of coastal flooding, high tides and floods were minimal compared to previous Nor'easters of the season.
