Severe thunderstorms and rain that came through southwestern Michigan on June 13 resulted in flooding areas of Abbott’s Sturgis Plant.
The storm caused: high winds, hail, power outages and flood damage throughout the area, reported Abbott’s press release. The rainfall overwhelmed the city’s storm water system in Sturgis, Michigan, and resulted in flooding in parts of the city, including areas of the plant.
The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch at 6:20 p.m. as the severe storms crossed Wisconsin, reported CNN. Those storms reached Michigan by 8 p.m. and St. Joseph County, northwest of Sturgis, was placed under a severe thunderstorm warning soon after.
Sturgis Kirsch Municipal Airport recorded 1.51 inches of rain as of 4:35 a.m. Tuesday, reported CNN.
The largest Consumers Energy outage was reported at 8:55 p.m. in St. Joseph County, reported CNN. 500 customers lost service, then 965, out of a total of 9,289 customers.
According to Abbott, it stopped the production of its EleCare specialty formula underway to assess damage caused by the storm, clean and resanitize the plant. Additionally, the FDA will conduct comprehensive testing along with the independent third party to ensure it is okay for operation.
According to Abbott’s press release, this will likely delay production and distribution of new products weeks.
Abbott adds that it still has an existing supply of EleCare and most of its specialty and metabolic formulas until new product is available.
