A storm water management system was installed on Soldiers Field in Mount Gretna, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania.
“There are plans for a small parking area years down the road,” said Chautauqua Foundation vice chairman John Feather in an interview with LebTown, reported LebTown. The lot will be made primarily with permeable materials.
According to Feather, the storm water management system will impact the east end of Soldiers Field and include parking for the Mount Gretna Outdoor Art Show, reported LebTown.
Trees were taken down to create the retention basin, but Feather adds that “we have no intention of clear cutting.” Instead, the Chautauqua planted close to 100 trees throughout the area of Soldiers Field.
The stormwater management facility is near completion, reported LebTown. Topsoil was added at some areas of the facility. According to Feather, the majority of the field will not be paved.
A small pedestrian bridge over the nearby creek will be built and walking paths will be made or restored.
Funding has not been secured, reported LebTown.
The Chautauqua Foundation now owns the 18.14-acre property in a deal. The Pennsylvania Chautauqua transferred the parcel from the foundation to help with grant applications.
The Pennsylvania Chautauqua purchased the property from Eastern Enterprises for nearly an approximate million dollars in 2018, reported LebTown.
The deal originally planned to: organize an open space activity park, which includes “walking/fitness trails, bird watching, picnic areas, connections to the Lebanon Valley Rails to Trails network, and activities for children,” reported LebTown.
