The Boston Parks and Recreation Department’s Urban Wilds Program applied for a Community Preservation Act (CPA) grant in October to help to continue improving Sherrin Woods in Hyde Park.

This proposed project would complement the 2018 project on the same Boston, Massachusetts, property, including storm water improvements as a part of the plan. Sherrin Woods Urban Wild is a 24-acre natural area and primarily a wooded upland. The area features two wetland areas and a large ledge outcropping, according to the city.

More specifically, as part of the project, Urban Wilds staff would oversee the removal of invasive plants and large piles of construction debris in the wetland buffer area, reported the city.

The area would then be replanted with native grasses, shrubs, and trees. Ultimately, improved storm drainage will be a focus of future improvements at the Sherrin Woods Urban Wild in Hyde Park.

This property was acquired in the early 1980s with a federal Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) grant. Since then, the property has been the focus of ongoing Urban Wilds projects, which have received assistance from summer youth crews through a partnership with The Southwest Boston Community Development Corporation.

Additionally, the community surrounding Sherrin Woods has also participated in meetings and events at this site, reported the city.

Protecting the natural environment and encouraging public use and stewardship of spaces including Sherrin Woods are the goals of the Urban Wilds Program.

Previous projects included installing two climbing areas at Pine Rock and also installing new plantings for wetland restoration to enhance the wildlife habitat and ecology of the two wetland areas.

The CPA grants will be announced in February, according to the city.
