The Borough of Avalon, N.J., has awarded a new management contract to Middlesex Water Company for the operation of Avalon’s water and sewer utility. The contract begins on July 1, 2012, and runs through June 2022. Middlesex Water will replace the New Jersey American Water Company as the management company responsible for the operations of the utility.

Middlesex Water Company is a provider of water and wastewater and related services, primarily in New Jersey and Delaware. Its subsidiary, Utility Service Affiliates Inc. has entered into a contract with the Borough of Avalon to operate and manage Avalon’s water, wastewater and storm water collection systems under a ten-year agreement. Avalon is one of New Jersey's premier beach communities with a summer population of approximately 30,000-40,000 persons.

The management responsibilities for Middlesex Water Company include all billing operations, meter installations, customer service issues, emergency response involving water and sewer line breaks, and the day-to-day operations of the water, sewer, and storm water system. The New Jersey American Water Company is working with Middlesex Water Company during the first six months of 2012 to ease the transition.

The company will employ between three to six people working full time in the Borough at all times to handle operations including maintaining well stations and pumping stations, conducting inspections and installing water meters.
