Hurricane season starts on June 1, 2025, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) stated that it “is not ready,” according to an internal agency review and reported by CNN.
The internal review conducted by FEMA was reportedly ordered by the new acting Administrator David Richardson as part of a problem-solving exercise. The review, obtained by CNN, stated that the agency has transitioned into a smaller footprint and that the intent for this hurricane season is not fully understood.
The review was also obtained by CBS News – stating that the review was a PowerPoint presentation. CBS News stated that FEMA identified problems within the agency and that much of its readiness process for hurricane season had been overlooked due to other activities.
An official at the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees FEMA, stated that the talk of unpreparedness was out of context and that FEMA is prepared for the season, according to CBS News.
According to The Hill, some of the slides from the internal review stated that FEMA resources were reduced and that the “quality of people lost cannot be replaced right away.”
