WEF recognizes leading MS4 programs for innovation and stormwater management excellence

The Water Environment Federation honored six municipalities at WEFTEC 2025 for their innovative stormwater management programs, showcasing leadership in water quality and flood resilience through data-driven and green infrastructure strategies.

The Water Environment Federation (WEF) honored six municipal stormwater programs at WEFTEC 2025 through its annual Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Awards, recognizing communities that demonstrate outstanding innovation, program management and leadership in stormwater management.

The 2025 MS4 Award winners include:

  • MS4 Phase I Innovation and Program Management: Anne Arundel County, Maryland – Bureau of Watershed Protection and Restoration

  • MS4 Phase II Innovation and Program Management: City of Alexandria, Virginia

  • MS4 Phase I Innovation: Howard County Government, Maryland

  • MS4 Phase I Program Management: City of Dallas, Texas

  • MS4 Phase II Innovation: Detroit Water and Sewerage Department, Michigan

  • MS4 Phase II Program Management: City of Mount Vernon, Ohio

This year’s honorees represent a range of communities – from large urban systems to smaller municipalities – each advancing the field through data-driven strategies, green infrastructure and community collaboration.

By recognizing these efforts, the MS4 Awards highlight how municipal stormwater programs are leading the way in improving water quality, enhancing flood resilience and fostering long-term environmental stewardship across North America.
