Volusia County breaks ground on $7 million stormwater improvement project
Volusia County officials joined representatives from the New Smyrna Beach and project partners to celebrate the start of construction on the Corbin Park Stormwater Improvement Project, a nearly $7 million initiative aimed at reducing flooding and strengthening stormwater infrastructure in the area.
The project is designed to improve stormwater conveyance during heavy rainfall events and reduce localized flooding impacts for nearby homes, roads and infrastructure. Funding includes approximately $4.9 million from federal Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery funds and about $2 million in matching funds from the city.
Planned improvements include installation of new underground stormwater pipes, upgraded drainage structures, treatment swales, utility relocations and outfall structures equipped with backflow prevention systems. Officials said the project will help reduce standing water on roadways, improve stormwater flow and limit travel disruptions during major rain events.
The Corbin Park project is part of broader resiliency efforts under the Transform386 program, which focuses on infrastructure upgrades and community recovery initiatives designed to prepare the region for future weather-related challenges.
